Texas Senate Committee Considers Non-Discrimination Protections for
LGBT Community

April 3, 2013 by Maureen McCarty, Online Content and Marketing Manager

Today the Texas Senate Committee on Economic Development heard
testimony on a bill to prohibit employment discrimination on the basis
of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.

Meghan Stabler, a member of HRC Board of Directors, and State
Legislative Director Sarah Warbelow testified in support of SB237.

"Corporate America continues to raise the bar in workplace fairness,
and now it is time that our lawmakers echo it," Stabler said in her
testimony. "LGBT-inclusive workplace policies are not only the right
thing to do and good business practices, they are the new normal."

Discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people
continues to be a very real problem. Currently, an individual can be
fired in 29 states for their sexual orientation, and 34 states for
their gender identity or expression.
